Purpose
The Student Resource Center (SRC) is designed to help students in the development of an educational plan that is compatible with their academic and life goals. The SRC works in collaboration with other university resources including major departments and major advisors to provide additional support for the students within the College of Health and Human Services.
Mission Statement
In addition to providing students with an education, the university has a commitment to provide students with the necessary resources required for making comprehensive decisions regarding their degree path. Part of that commitment includes a responsibility to make available accurate and appropriate advising. The Student Resource Center is founded on the belief that students function best when the outline of their responsibilities as students is clear. The SRC will act as a clearinghouse of information on the many components of university life a student must pay attention to in addition to their academic responsibilities. These components include, among others:
- Awareness and understanding of university policies and regulations
- Making a commitment to seek advising at "pivotal points" in their academic progress
- Knowledge of university resources available to all students
- Pursuing information about career opportunities and advanced graduate study
The SRC does not wish to replace the relationship the student makes with their department and major advisor, but to supplement it. From the broader perspective of the Resource Center, students may be guided to search out other resources on campus as needed, or be helped to identify academic and career choices that may not be readily apparent to the student. The SRC will also focus on such fundamentals as GE advising and graduation requirements, which can often be overlooked by a departmental advisor whose main concern is the major requirements. The Student Resource Center also seeks to provide students with a sense of belonging within the larger context of their College, to help counteract the often impersonal setting of a large urban university.
While we cannot mandate that a student be pro-active in their educational and career choices, we believe that by providing the most accurate, accessible and comprehensive information and assistance available, we are fulfilling our obligation as educators, to our students in the College of Health and Human Services. If the students seek us out, we will be there.
