Welcome to the voyage log of the Tall Ship Semester for Girls 2006.  In these pages, our current crew of students will be chronicling their voyage.  You may read their journal entries, essays and poetry as well as see their faces as we sail over 2000 miles from March 23 to May 2, 2006.  Send us an email if you have questions and we’ll try and have one of our student’s reply:

TSSG 2006 STUDENT BIOS

Jamiylah AsaadJamiylah Asaad: My name is Jamiylah Asaad. Before attending Tall Ships, I was a junior at MetWest High in Oakland. I joined this program for the traveling and the adventure. I also wanted to challenge myself and to become the responsible, dependable, and mature person I see myself being in the future.

Ife CookIfe Cook: Hi my name is Ife Cook. I am 16 years old and I was born and raised in San Francisco, CA. I attend Gateway High School where I first heard about the Tall Ships program when I was a freshman. I was very interested when I heard about it but I knew I couldn't do it then because I was a freshman. I forgot about the program in 10th grade. Then, in 11th grade Tall Ships came back to our school and gave anther presentation and I knew I could do it this time. I was so excited and couldn't wait to apply. When I found out I got it I was so happy to get out of normal high school and experience something completely new to me.

Mesha DrewMesha Drew: My name is Mesha Drew and I am a junior at June Jordan School for Equity. I decided to be apart of this program because I felt that this program would be a great experience for me and would take me out of what was normal for me. I felt that this program would teach me independence and would broaden my horizon allowing me to use what I develop in experiences to come. I am really excited and anxious about the up coming voyage to the Caribbean. I know I will this experience will change my life forever.

Christine FongChristine Fong: I was born and raised in the city of San Francisco: the greatest city in the world. I live in the Castro District where boundaries and cultures are crossed all the time. I have grown accustomed to appreciate individuality, courage, and the act of taking risks. When I heard about Tall Ship Semester for Girls through friends that did it last year, I never thought that I would be capable of achieving something that took so much commitment. But when I heard wonderful stories of the challenges and triumphs that came with the voyage, I decided that I would apply and start an experience of my own that would change my life. The experience so far has been amazing. I have learned only from raising money for the trip, that I can make whatever I put my mind to a reality. I am so excited to see what this experience brings, and where it will take me in my life.

Ryan MarksRyan Marks: My parents named me Ryan because they say I kicked a lot in the womb and they wanted to convey my strength in my name. My middle name is Bianca, which they chose to undermine the masculinity in my name. As of now I am 18-years-old and currently live in San Francisco. I went to Gateway High School up until now, but I thought that finishing off my high school career with a life altering experience in the Caribbean might be nice! In my spare time, I like to hang out with friends, read adventure books, listen to all kinds of music, and shop. When contemplating the program I am filled with mixed thoughts. Though I know that it will be difficult and strenuous challenge, I am certain I will leave the experience with much more wisdom, experience, and intelligence.

Jane MarqueJane Marque: Hi, my name is Jane Marque. I was previously a junior at Gateway High School. When I was accepted into Tall Ships, I immediately thought, "Wow, this is going to change my life..." I am a strong believer in spontaneity because opportunities come up that may change your direction and going with the flow makes life all the more interesting. I never imagined that I would be sailing a ship in the Caribbean, but I feel that I was destined for this experience. Most people who know me know that I love to design. One of my favorite places to decorate and personalize is my room. I think in the future I may want to be a graphic designer or interior decorator. My other interests are going for runs or walks on the beach, dancing, being with friends, going to concerts in the park/ music, traveling, and taking random buses around the city. I am really excited about this semester and hope to learn a lot about myself and the world!

Christina MarquezChristina Marquez: My name is Christina Maria Marquez and I am a senior this year (’06!!). I enjoy reading literature and I like to write. I work for a non-profit poetry organization called Youth Speaks and I like to be around people. I am constantly searching for new, exciting ways to challenge the expectations of living a typical life of a teenage girl growing up in San Francisco. I like to be creative and have a good attitude as often as possible. I believe in individualism and am for the most part obsessed with diversity. I appreciate the wilderness and I am completely infatuated with wildlife. Did I mention I love new experiences? This is, for the most part, the reason why I have decided to join Tall Ships this year. I am so excited to learn about different cultures and how people outside of the United States live their lives. I am so excited to experience the wonders of solitude and be freed from the hectic city. I am especially excited to learn how to sail. I just want to learn everything that there is to know about this world. I want to experience everything hands on. Essentially I want to discover the world that exists outside of the Bay Area. I am also very intimidated by large body of waters like: the ocean, so I figure spending six weeks in it will help me to become better acquainted with the aquatic life. Oh and, I AM REALLY EXCITED!!!

Mia RobertsonMia Robertson: I am an Alaskan; I have grown up in a small fishing town called Homer at the end of the Kenai Peninsula. I love to experience new things and try out fresh ideas. Learning and living life to its fullest comes easily to me. Swimming, skiing, and horseback riding are a few of my favorite things, and I also love reading, writing and languages. I’ve been lucky enough to move to San Francisco for the duration of the program, and am enjoying this wonderful city.

Mercedes Scott-FowlerMercedes Scott-Fowler: Mercedes Scott-Fowler: My name is Mercedes Scott-Fowler and last semester I attended Lowell High School. I love to do aerial static trapeze and have done so for six years. I consider myself a fairly active person, but on the contrary, I also enjoy reading and writing prose, for both myself and the people around me. I really wanted to be a part of this program because it seemed like something I would benefit from greatly; this program will help me learn to organize myself, keep motivated, and teach me discipline. The idea of getting a break from traditional high school experience for something as exceptional as Tall Ships was mind-blowing for me and I was ecstatic about being accepted. I can't wait to see what it has in store for me!

Melanie SherbulaMelanie Sherbula: I am an outspoken open minded person, who loves a great challenge. I am an Irish, Mexican, Native American young woman and I am proud of who I am. I was born and raised in San Francisco California and have lived here my whole life. I am in the 11th grade at Jefferson High School in Daly City. The Tall Ship Semester for Girls program was introduced to me by Marcos and a few girls from the previous years. They gave an exciting presentation about the trip at my school. Once I heard what the program was all about I just knew that I didn't care how much it was going to cost - I had to go. I knew that my parents would be supportive in my decision, because they knew that my dream was always to see new things and travel around the world. There are a lot of things that I hope to get out of this experience. I hope that my out look on life is positive and more ambitious. Also I hope that I become a better and stronger person because of this and that I will have built a new level of confidence and independence. After this experience I will return to Jefferson and live out my senior year and hope to be at my best and do my best in and out of school. And of course after I graduate I will be going to college and hopefully starting my successful career.

Angel ThackerayAngel Thackeray: My name is Angel Thackeray. My strongest personality trait is determination. This trait was born from stubbornness and has grown into something that has enabled me to strive for what I want in life and become the young woman that I am today. I was home-schooled by my mother and father until the age of 15 when I decided to attend a public high school in the Mission District of San Francisco. If I had to name the one thing that being home-schooled taught me, it would be how to take all options into account, weigh them equally and in the end decide what is best for me personally.

I am currently attending the June Jordan School for Equity. I am a junior and a member of the founding class of the school. I plan on attending college on the East Coast and to major in medicine. A few of my future goals are to pursue a career in the medical field, be financially successful and, to someday, have children of my own.
